Cat Scan (CT Scan)

CAT scan, or CT scan, stands for Computerized Axial Tomography. This modality uses computers and X-rays to generate images of the human body in cross-section. For example, instead of viewing a loaf of bread from the outside as we normally do, a CAT scan would be able to see slices of the loaf while leaving the loaf whole. Also, three-dimensional images of certain selected parts of the body can be constructed, such as the anklebones and other joints. Sometimes, contrast material is used to help distinguish between different tissues. The ability to see individual structures in the body allow the doctors at Missouri Delta Medical Center to identify abnormalities in these structures, also sometimes called organs.

CAT scans are used to obtain information about the head, lungs, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spine, kidneys, pelvis, and joints, as well as other organ systems. This information is helpful in detecting evidence of trauma, blood, clots, tumors and abscesses as well as other problems.

What preparation do I need for my CAT scan?

Often the patient will be asked not to eat or drink for several hours before the examination. Contrastmaterial may be given by mouth, sometimes beginning the night before. Sometimes intravenous contrast is given at the time of the examination, so that structures can be better identified. A history of contrast (e.g. iodine) allergy should be reported to our staff prior to the procedure.

What is a CAT scan like?

A CAT Scan may take anywhere from one-half hour to one and one-half hours. The patient is placed on a table, which enters a large machine with a round opening. At various times, the patient may be asked to hold his or her breath. A CAT scan is painless. The patient will be asked to remain motionless at various times when images are being acquired. If you need copies of the study, just ask the technologist.
