Awarded High Scores
for Quality
On
January 28-30th, 2002, Missouri Delta Medical Center was inspected by
three JCAHO surveyors, a physician, a nurse, and an administrator. Standards
for patient care, patient education, infection control, environment of
care, safety, information management, governance, medical staff, and other
issues were reviewed to evaluate Missouri Delta Medical Center's performance
in areas that affect patient care. Missouri Delta Medical Center scores
resulted in 97 percent and 100 percent, 100 percent being awarded  to
our Continu-Care Home Care Services. The average scores for all hospitals
surveyed in 2000 were 88 percent. These scores demonstrate our commitment
to provide quality health care.
In
the early 1960s, the sponsoring federal agency in charge of Medicare could
not evaluate the quality of all hospitals. The Medicare Act of 1965 stated
that hospitals accredited by JCAHO would be eligible to participate in
the Medicare and Medicaid programs. JCAHO, a private organization, became
an official inspection arm for the government.

In
1986, to align with the concept of Quality Improvement/Total Quality
Management, the newly named JCAHO began to rewrite its standards.
They did away with department specific standards and replaced them
with standards that apply to the entire organization.
Today
JCAHO is the primary accreditor of health care organizations in
the U.S. It evaluates and accredits over 15,000 organizations. Surveys
are conducted every three years. Accreditation by JCAHO is not required
by law, but it provides an advantage in terms of public image and
competitiveness.
