Laboratory
When
Accuracy Counts
.
When
your physician needs fast, accurate test results, there's no room for
error. That's why the laboratory at Missouri Delta Medical Center has
the most advanced technology available for a multitude of diagnostic tests.
Hematology:
This area involves the study of blood and
blood components. Blood is composed of plasma, the liquid portion, and
cells, the solid portion. Cells are counted and examined for abnormalities,
which could indicate disease. Also, coagulation studies are performed.
This allows the doctor to regulate the patient's medication, which aids
in the prevention of blood clots.
Clinical
Chemistry:
Clinical chemistry aids in the diagnosis
of disease by analyzing blood and other body fluids for their chemical
composition. For example, blood glucose determinations are used to
regulate insulin dosage. In recent years, chemical determinations
have been performed in this area to monitor the efficiency of therapeutic
drugs. Specific tumor markers for various disease states are available
for testing in the chemistry area. New, state-of-the-art instrumentation
is now available which provides more efficient service for the patient
and the physician. |

Blood
Bank:
Our primary concern in this area of
the lab is the typing of blood and the testing of blood for its
compatibility with that of the recipient. The Blood Bank at Missouri
Delta Medical Center processes approximately 1700 units of packed
cells each year and is operated under the direction of a Medical
Technologist. This area is also responsible for the procurement
and processing of other blood products such as platelets, which
are necessary for the blood to clot. Fresh, frozen plasma is also
stored in our Blood Bank for administration to patients who are
lacking in any of the coagulation factors.
Microbiology:
This area concentrates on the study
of micro-organisms, such as bacteria and protozoa. Sensitivity testing
allows the physician to select the appropriate antibiotic for the
patient based on the results of the test. Complex bio-chemical reactions
are used to identify the genus and species of the bacteria, which
aid the physician in his diagnosis.
Pathology:
This medical specialty is concerned
with diagnosing disease by using a variety of diagnostic tests on
blood and urine as well as surgical tissue samples. We are proud
to have an excellent and experienced Pathologist on staff at Missouri
Delta Medical Center — Donald
Cento, MD.
