Name of Disorder
Description
Symptoms
Sleep Apnea
A serious medical disorder in which breathing is repeatedly obstructed for periods. Can occur hundreds of times a night. This disorder can contribute to other medical problems, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Habitual snoring, daytime sleepiness, Irritability, brief memory impairment.
Narcolepsy A disorder of the central nervous system that causes excessive daytime sleepiness and/or cataplexy (sleep paralysis). Sleep attacks, sudden weakness or paralysis from laughter or anger, brief feeling of paralysis when falling asleep or awakening.
Restless Legs Syndrome Sensations in the legs resulting in a need for frequent movement to provide comfort. Can often lead to insomnia and Periodic Limb Movement Syndrome (the occasional kicking or moving of the limbs while asleep). "Creepy crawlers" in the limbs.
Insomnia A condition characterized by difficulty falling asleep or maintaining sleep. This may be the result of depression or other sleep or medical disorders. Sleeplessness, inability to sleep.

Those suffering these symptoms, as well as those listed above, can usually benefit from treatment at the Sleep Institute:

          · Weight gain
          · Unintentionally falling asleep
          · Persons with legs that ache, and twitch or jerk at night

Once a patient is referred to the Sleep Institute, tests are performed by our highly trained physicians and technicians, to diagnose a sleep disorder. Often, the first of these tests is a polysomnogram, or sleep study. This procedure monitors sleep patterns, such as brain waves, muscle activity, heart rate, breathing and snoring. The results assist doctors in finding many diagnoses, however additional testing, such as multiple sleep latency tests, conducted as the patient takes daytime naps, may be needed to diagnose disorders not evident at night.

The Sleep Institute offers rapid diagnostic and treatment services that help patients restore quality, restful sleep. Trained sleep specialists review the results of tests performed and work with you and your physician to find the most appropriate treatment available.
