Ultrasound

One of the most common uses of the ultrasound is the exam of a mother's womb.     This diagnostic tool uses sound waves and computer technology to "see" inside the body. Ultrasound is used in the evaluation of various abdominal organs and the breasts. One of the most common US procedures is the examination of the living fetus within the mother's womb (OBSTETRIC sonography). Ultrasound, unlike most other imaging methods, can create "movies" of the heart bearing, peristalsis (contraction) of bowel loops, and can show flowing blood. It is safe, painless and can often provide information that eliminates the need for more expensive tests or surgery. Ultrasound can be used to evaluate breast lumps and abnormalities seen on mammograms. It is often used to guide biopsies, such as breast biopsies.

Computerized ultrasound technology is employed in other applications as well. Using a special form of Ultrasound called DOPPLER (just like police RADAR), the speed and direction of flowing blood can be measured and illustrated in color pictures. This Doppler technique allows Radiologists to find blocked blood vessels.

What kind of preparation will I need for my ultrasound?

For abdominal ultrasounds, for example a gall bladder examination, you must fast for six hours to optimize the study. For early fetal ultrasound studies and pelvic examinations, a full bladder is necessary. Call us if you have any questions about the preparation.

Is an ultrasound painful?

An ultrasound examination is completely painless and safe. Warm contact gel is applied to optimize the study.
